Terms of Use
Last updated: July 2026
By using VIN Decoder, you agree to the terms below. If you don't agree with them, please don't use the site.
What this site is
VIN Decoder is a free tool that decodes vehicle identification numbers and checks them against NHTSA's public recall registry. It is provided for informational purposes only.
Acceptable use
You agree to use VIN Decoder only for lawful purposes. You agree not to:
- Attempt to disrupt, overload, or scrape the site in a way that degrades service for other users
- Use the tool to facilitate fraud, including VIN cloning or misrepresenting a vehicle's identity
- Reverse engineer, resell, or rebrand the tool as your own commercial product without permission
- Use automated systems to submit high-volume queries that could trigger NHTSA's own rate limits and affect other users
No warranty
VIN Decoder is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that decode results or recall data are complete, current, or error-free. Data is sourced from NHTSA and reflects whatever that database returns at the time of your query.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, VIN Decoder and its operator are not liable for any decision made, purchase completed, or loss incurred based on information shown by this tool. This includes, without limitation, decisions to buy, sell, finance, or insure a vehicle.
Third-party data and links
Vehicle and recall data is retrieved live from NHTSA's public APIs. We do not control that data and are not responsible for its accuracy. Any external links on this site lead to third-party content we do not control.
Changes to the service
We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of VIN Decoder at any time, without notice.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
